Shepherd’s Pie

Ingredients (Serves 4)

For the Meat Filling:

  • 500g ground lamb (or beef for Cottage Pie)

  • 1 onion (chopped)

  • 2 carrots (diced)

  • 1 cup peas

  • 2 tbsp tomato paste

  • 1 cup beef stock

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tbsp oil

  • Salt & pepper

For the Mashed Potato Topping:

  • 5–6 potatoes

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • ½ cup milk

  • Salt


Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Make the Potato Topping

  1. Peel potatoes and cut into chunks.

  2. Boil in salted water for 15 minutes until soft.

  3. Drain the water.

  4. Add butter, milk, and salt.

  5. Mash until smooth.

  6. Set aside.


Step 2: Prepare the Meat Filling

  1. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a pan.

  2. Add chopped onions and carrots; cook until soft.

  3. Add the ground lamb/beef and cook until browned.

  4. Stir in tomato paste and cook for 1 minute.

  5. Pour in beef stock and Worcestershire sauce.

  6. Add peas and stir everything together.

  7. Simmer for 10 minutes until slightly thickened.

  8. Add salt and pepper to taste.


Step 3: Assemble the Pie

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F).

  2. Pour the meat filling into a baking dish.

  3. Spread the mashed potatoes on top.

  4. Use a fork to create lines (helps with browning).


Step 4: Bake

  1. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.

  2. Remove from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes.
